Dolly Parton Gives Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire Advice on Grieving Brandon Blackstock’s Death

Dolly Parton recently shared compassionate words for anyone struggling to cope with the death of someone dear.

In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight on August 11, 2025, the country icon was asked whether she had reached out to Kelly Clarkson after the passing of Clarkson’s ex-husband, music manager Brandon Blackstock—who was also Reba McEntire’s stepson.

“I haven’t had the chance yet,” Parton admitted. “We’ve been so wrapped up in everything on my end, but I will. I love Reba, and I love Kelly.”

Brandon Blackstock died on August 7, 2025, at 48, following a three-year fight against melanoma. He and Clarkson were married from 2013 until their divorce in 2022, and McEntire was wed to his father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 to 2015.

Parton, who herself is mourning the loss of her husband Carl Dean this past March after nearly sixty years together, offered guidance to anyone grieving: “Be thankful for the time you shared. Hold onto the joyful moments and let the love they gave you become part of you. Honor their memory by celebrating their spirit, knowing they’re in a better place now.”

Shortly after Brandon’s death, Starstruck Entertainment—Narvel Blackstock’s company where Brandon served as an executive—released a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce Brandon Blackstock has passed away after a brave battle with cancer lasting over three years. He died peacefully, surrounded by family. We appreciate your prayers and ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
