Doja Cat & The Weeknd Go ‘Right’ to No. 1 on Hot R&B Songs Chart

The combined star power of Doja Cat and The Weeknd leads the pair to No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B Songs chart as their collaboration “You Right” tops the list dated Sept. 4. The track ascends from No. 4 largely thanks to its continued growth at radio while it maintains a strong streaming presence.

“You Right” marks Doja Cat’s second No. 1 on Hot R&B Songs, after her breakout single “Say So,” featuring Nicki Minaj, ruled for three weeks in 2020.

The Weeknd, meanwhile, nabs his record-padding eighth Hot R&B Songs leader (dating to the chart’s 2012 inception). Here’s an updated review of his collection:

  • “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey),” 14 weeks at No. 1, beginning April 11, 2015
  • “Can’t Feel My Face,” 11, July 18, 2015
  • “The Hills,” 14, Oct. 3, 2015
  • “Starboy,” featuring Daft Punk, 20, Oct. 15, 2016
  • “Call Out My Name,” one, April 4, 2018
  • “Heartless,” one, Dec. 14, 2019
  • “Blinding Lights,” 48, a record, March 7, 2020
  • “You Right,” with Doja Cat, one (to date), Sept. 4, 2021

The Weeknd also adds his record-extending 110th week atop Hot R&B Songs.

Radio support provides the biggest boon for “You Right” in its coronation week, especially as the track has support from multiple formats (all of which help contribute to the single’s ranking on Hot R&B Songs). On the R&B/hip-hop front, the collaboration pushes 31-29 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart with 4.7 million in audience in the week ending Aug. 29, according to MRC Data, up 11% from the prior frame. Similarly, it climbs two spots on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart (24-22), which ranks the most-played songs on mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations. There, “You Right” nabbed 12% more plays in the week ending Aug. 29 than the previous seven-day window.

Even greater support comes from the rhythmic and pop worlds. “You Right” leads the Rhythmic Airplay chart for a second straight week, defending its crown despite a 1% dip in weekly plays. On Pop Airplay, it lifts 10-9 through a 7% gain in plays.

While radio provides the most uptick, the song’s streaming and sales impact — which also contribute to Hot R&B Songs ranks — remains fairly consistent. The collab repeats its No. 2 rank (after having reached No. 1 in June) on R&B Streaming Songs, but fell 1% to 10 million U.S. clicks in the week ending Aug. 26. Still, it registers an eighth week (of nine since its release) above the 10-million mark. In sales, it retreats 5-7 on R&B Digital Song Sales but improved 9% to 2,500 sold in the same period.

“You Right” appears on Doja Cat’s latest studio release, Planet Her. The set, released in June, logs an eighth week at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart, encompassing all but one week of its entire run history so far.
