Known for her genre-blending approach, Doja Cat says she’s willing to explore a wide musical palette — but country music isn’t one of the directions she plans to take. In an extended conversation with CBS Sunday Morning published Sept. 21, the artist described how she enjoys mixing pop, jazz, R&B and hip-hop, yet was unequivocal when asked whether she’d try country.

“Country,” she answered with a laugh, making clear it’s not on her immediate agenda.

When host Michelle Miller probed how Doja defines her own sound, the Los Angeles–born performer summarized it plainly: “I think pop. I think I’m a rapper who makes pop music.”

Vie: a pop-forward follow-up

The interview came days before the release of Doja’s new album, Vie, which is scheduled to arrive on Sept. 26. Largely produced by Jack Antonoff and positioned as a more pop-driven collection, Vie follows 2023’s Scarlet and — according to Doja — represents a reconnection with the melodic sensibilities that first brought her mainstream attention.

She reflected that Scarlet felt like an energetic detour, and that Vie allowed her to appreciate and return to elements of her earlier work she hadn’t fully embraced at the time — even songs she once resisted because they sounded too mainstream.

Fans have already sampled Vie via the single “Jealous Type,” released in August; the track reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.
