Director Explains Why Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Can Be Played Without the Original Game
Final Fantasy VII Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the remake trilogy can be played without any prior experience with the original game, although knowing the classic title helps players better catch plot changes.
Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the remake trilogy is designed for newcomers, even though familiarity with the original version allows players to notice story modifications more easily.
Hamaguchi noted that fans of the original game are “completely right” to recommend playing the classic first, because its story is “deeply woven into the history and narrative of the Remake series.” Knowing the original also helps players spot changes:
If you know what the original story was like and can catch what is changing or seems like it is going to change, you will have more fun.
At the same time, the trilogy is “strongly designed so that even someone who has not played the original can start with any of the parts and have a genuinely great experience.” Hamaguchi suggested that starting with the remakes might even be better due to their “graphic splendor,” which can deliver a stronger emotional impact.
It all depends on preferences. It is not so straightforward.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will be released on April 8, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
