Dick Parry, Saxophonist on Pink Floyd Classics, Dies at 83

Dick Parry, the legendary saxophonist whose soulful performances defined some of Pink Floyd’s most enduring masterpieces, has passed away at the age of 83.

The news of his passing was shared on Friday (May 22) by David Gilmour, who penned a heartfelt tribute to his lifelong musical partner and dear friend.

“My dear friend Dick Parry passed away this morning,” Gilmour, 80, wrote in an Instagram post accompanying a poignant collection of photographs. “I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside Dick on saxophone since I was seventeen—he was a vital part of my journey, including my years with Pink Floyd.”

While an official cause of death has not been released, fans and peers alike are mourning the loss of a musician whose contributions elevated the rock landscape.

Parry’s career was defined by his evocative, signature saxophone work on classic albums like 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon and 1975’s Wish You Were Here. His haunting, melodic solos on tracks such as “Money” and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” remain staples of classic rock history.

Reflecting on Parry’s artistic legacy, Gilmour noted, “His phrasing and tone were entirely his own. It was a signature sound—one of immense beauty that resonated with millions and remains an essential element of songs like ‘Us and Them,’ ‘Wish You Were Here,’ and ‘Money.’”

Born in 1942 in Kentford, Suffolk, Parry first connected with Gilmour during their teenage years, cutting their teeth in local bands around the Cambridge music scene. Their collaboration flourished throughout the decades, with Parry frequently joining Gilmour on both Pink Floyd tours and individual solo endeavors. Notably, he contributed to “Wearing the Inside Out” on the 1994 Pink Floyd album The Division Bell and toured extensively with the band during their mid-70s peak.

Beyond his work with Pink Floyd, Parry’s versatile talent allowed him to collaborate with an array of influential artists, including Rory Gallagher, John Entwistle, and blues legend Lightnin’ Slim.
