Diablo 4 Fans Complain at First, Then Eat Their Words and Start Playing — Season 10 Is Steam’s Most Successful

The “Infernal Chaos” season for Diablo 4 launched on September 23, 2025, and within days became one of the most successful seasons in the game’s history. After fatigue with prior updates, players were given something genuinely fresh.

Blizzard rolled out a large-scale promotion — a 55% discount combined with free play days for newcomers. The result was striking: at its Steam peak, 49,000 players were online simultaneously, surpassing all previous season peaks. The only larger surge occurred during the release of the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Fans argue that free access played a minimal role — comparable promotions in Seasons Five and Seven did not yield similar results.

A key change was dialing back the role of bosses in the endgame. Where the strongest items once dropped exclusively from boss lairs, top-tier loot can now be discovered inside Nightmare Dungeons and while fighting hordes of enemies.

“I think reducing the importance of boss lairs this season was an excellent move. The best gear is found elsewhere. Playing has become far more engaging, and I don’t feel like I’m constantly farming lairs,” wrote camthalion87.

“The boss ladder was the dullest part of Diablo 4. It’s still available if you need a specific unique for a build, but Chaos uniques are something awesome and powerful you can find out in the open world. The gameplay is better than in any season since the boss ladder was introduced,” noted Karltowns17.

But not everyone is convinced it’s a lasting success. Some community members believe the spike is driven by an influx of new players, while veterans remain hesitant to come back.
