It went down in the DMs. Demi Lovato remembered how they shot their shot with Emily Hampshire of Schitt’s Creek.
But the conversation about it went down on Wednesday’s (Sept. 1) episode of the 4D With Demi Lovato podcast, where the actress who played Stevie Budd on Schitt’s Creek recalled how the Dancing With the Devil singer asked her out on a date — and why it didn’t go as planned.
“You slid in my DMs and you said, ‘Hey, I like you on the show. We should kick it sometime,'” said Hampshire. “And then you said, below it, ‘And by kick it, I mean go on a date. I find you attractive.’ You made it clear it was a date. And I loved that because sometimes that’s confusing. I’m decades older than you, so ‘kick it,’ I was looking it up.”
But Hampshire, 40, is not actually decades older than Lovato, 29. And Lovato tried comparing the age gap between them to that of Sarah Paulson, 46, and her partner Holland Taylor, 78.
“And then right after, you said, ‘Ooh! I don’t mean you’re the Holland Taylor.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, you did,'” said Hampshire while interjecting Lovato’s bursts of laughter. The actress described the exchange as “the funniest thing in the world” despite telling the singer that she feared they wouldn’t find the same things to be funny.
“No! No! I just love them together, I really do,” Lovato explained in their defense.
And for the record, Hampshire said she’s “proud to be” the Holland Taylor in the situation, even though the two are happily friends. Said the actress: “You’re a dope friend! And I’m happy we became friends.”
