Hideo Kojima has revealed a new original anime set in the Death Stranding universe titled Death Stranding Isolations (working title). The series, slated to debut on Disney+ in 2027, will follow a young man and woman as they undertake a perilous journey across a fractured world.

The production will embrace traditional, hand‑drawn 2D animation and is being developed by E&H Production, a studio established in 2021 by former MAPPA director and animator Sunghoo Park. Kojima Productions says the project assembles some of Japan’s leading animation talent to bring the series to life. New concept art by character designer Ilya Kuvshinov — known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 — was also unveiled alongside the announcement. The announcement took place during the Disney+ Originals Preview event at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, where Kojima and series director Takayuki Sano introduced the partnership with Disney+. According to Kojima Productions, the collaboration marks the franchise’s first original animated series for a global streaming platform.

Series synopsis

Decades after a cataclysmic phenomenon known as the Death Stranding fractured the world, the boundary between the living and the dead has grown thin. Manifestations of lost souls reach into the physical realm, and a devastating reaction to those connections has repeatedly annihilated swathes of civilization. Survivors live apart, distrustful and cut off from one another.

Amid this isolation, a legendary porter emerges — someone who carries cargo and the wishes attached to it, literally and metaphorically reconnecting people in the hope of restoring what was lost. The series follows several characters whose lives intersect on the brink of extinction: an elderly man seeking salvation by other means, a battle‑hardened woman intent on provoking constant conflict, a youth nursing a grudge against the porter figure, and a girl who has learned to accept solitude.

As their paths converge, their choices and desires set the stage for another dramatic turning point — and another explosion that will determine whether humanity endures.

Death Stranding Isolations remains a working title and could change before release. When it arrives, the series will stream on Disney+ in 2027. This animated project is separate from other Death Stranding adaptations currently in development: the animated film Death Stranding: Mosquito (working title) and the live‑action feature A24 is developing with director Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One).
