Creators of 007: First Light Explain Why Their Bond Isn’t a Superhero
Over the decades the image of James Bond has come to represent the ideal agent — a lone operative facing entire armies. IO Interactive’s 007 First Light, however, reframes that archetype. The game examines how Bond evolved into the persona the world now knows.
Creative director Hakan Abrak said in an interview that the studio never intended to present Bond as a finished superman from the outset:
“He shouldn’t arrive already at the top of his game — toughened and sealed off by armour after a trail of disappointments. That would be far less compelling.”
According to narrative director Martin Emborg, the classic Bond — particularly as seen in 1962’s Doctor No — already reads like a fully formed protagonist:
“He wins at baccarat from an alluring woman who simply wants one thing: for him to drive her home. He drinks, and he’s plainly bored. For him it’s just another Thursday. It’s pure wish-fulfillment, isn’t it? But it doesn’t feel very realistic.”
In 007 First Light Bond retains his charisma, but it’s rawer and more impulsive — that of a true novice. In the demo he defies orders to chase a target across rural terrain, then appears in a dramatic airplane set piece.
The game is scheduled to launch on March 27, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
