Clayface Box Office May Trail Supergirl, But DC Studios Sees Upside
Early box office projections have emerged for the upcoming DCU body horror film.
According to early forecasts from Box Office Pro, “Clayface” could earn between $23 million and $33 million in North America during its opening weekend. Even the upper end of this projection falls below the opening weekend of “Supergirl,” which brought in $37.1 million in North America during its first weekend and finished its global theatrical run with $126.4 million.
With a production budget of $170 million, “Supergirl” was a box office disappointment, but “Clayface” cost the studio significantly less. The horror film’s production cost was approximately $40 million, meaning it requires a much smaller box office haul to break even. Rough estimates indicate the film needs to gross roughly $80 million to $100 million worldwide, and under the current projections, that target looks entirely achievable.

“Clayface” offers a body horror take on one of Batman’s adversaries. James Watkins directed the feature, Mike Flanagan wrote the screenplay, and Tom Rhys Harries stars in the lead role. The cast also features Naomi Ackie, Eddie Marsan, and Max Minghella.
The film’s worldwide premiere is scheduled for October 21.
