Italian screen icon Claudia Cardinale has died at the age of 87, her agent told AFP; she passed away in Nemours, France, surrounded by her children.

Cardinale was born in Tunis in 1938 and launched her film career after winning a beauty contest; her first screen appearance came in the drama Goha (1958), opposite Omar Sharif.
