Christina Aguilera Throws Support Behind Britney Spears

Christina Aguilera is 100% behind her lifelong friend (and pop music rival) Britney Spears.

Aguilera, like many of us, has taken some time to digest the troubling revelations Spears shared last week when she approached the Los Angeles Superior Court with testimony of her 13-year conservatorship.

In a post on Twitter, Aguilera addresses the “unacceptable” situation Spears finds herself in and the potential harm done, and she throws her love and support behind the artist.

“It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish,” writes Aguilera, in a thread accompanied with a throwback photo of the pair as kids.

“To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable. The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly.”

Every woman must have “the right to her own body,” Aguilera continues, “her own reproductive system, her own privacy, her own space, her own healing and her own happiness.”

Aguilera’s comments come after Spears spoke openly about her conservatorship, primarily overseen by her father, Jamie Spears, for the first time since 2008.

At Wednesday’s virtual hearing, the “Toxic” claimed her father revels in his control over her and that she has been overworked, over-medicated and abused by the people she pays through her conservatorship, igniting the #FreeBritney hashtag to trend globally.

The pop star also revealed that, despite her own wishes, she has an IUD that prevents her from having more children.

“The conviction and desperation of this plea for freedom leads me to believe that this person I once knew has been living without compassion or decency from those in control,” continues Aguilera.

“To a woman who has worked under conditions and pressure unimaginable to most,” she concludes. “I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life. My heart goes out to Britney. She deserves all the TRUE love and support in the world.”

Spears and Aguilera go way back. The performers were child stars on the Mickey Mouse Club, and their pop careers skyrocketed in tandem back in the early 2000s. The pair even shared the stage with Madonna at the 2003 MTV VMAs one of the event’s most infamous moments.

During a 2019 interview with E News, XTina said it was “inevitable” that the pair would collaborate on a song, though Spears has cast doubt on whether she will ever return to performing.
