Chance the Rapper has written an op-ed for the Chicago Tribune, advocating for the continued existence of South Side elementary college National Teachers Academy, which Chicago Public Schools (CPS) plans to shut. He notes that his group, SocialWorks, has collaborated with CPS to assist “see CPS students succeed.” “Instead,” he writes, “I am witnessing what seems to be the never-ending cycle of the displacement of our black and brown children.”
Chance continues, “If CPS succeeds in its plan to close NTA, I can’t help but ask what will happen next…. CPS’ inadequate transition plan and its seemingly discriminatory rationale for closing the school in the first place tell me that the answers won’t be positive.” Read Chance’s full op-ed on the Chicago Tribune.
Last 12 months, Chance donated $1 million to CPS, adopted by a massive fundraising campaign. In October, he introduced that his New Chance enrichment fund, which extends to 20 public faculties, would run for one more 12 months. Recently, he publicly endorsed Amara Enyia for Mayor of Chicago and shared a goofy video explaining the town’s political system.
