CDPR Explains Why The Witcher 3 Did Not Add Diablo IV Content Despite Collaboration

CD Projekt RED is open to offers, but new content must not become exclusive.

Blizzard Entertainment and CD Projekt RED recently revealed details about the Diablo IV and The Witcher 3 collaboration. The ARPG will add a Geralt-style skin, but there is a catch: it is promised as a gift to players who pre-order the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past story expansion through the Battle.net service or purchase it there after release.

The developers have not announced any plans to add Diablo IV-style content to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. During an interview with media, Lead Designer Miles Tost explained that CD Projekt RED strives for content consistency so that it remains identical across all platforms.

When directly asked by a Polygon journalist whether CD Projekt RED had considered adding Diablo-themed content to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Tost replied:

We haven’t seriously thought about that yet. It is very important for us not to release content that becomes exclusive depending on where you buy it […] For us, this is truly a matter of principle: if you buy a game, you should get the full version of it.

Instead of in-game exclusives, Miles Tost explained that CD Projekt RED previously offered physical bonuses. He cited hoodies and card sets as examples. Tost emphasized that CD Projekt RED is “always open to interesting ways of collaborating,” meaning that a Diablo-style skin is still not entirely ruled out if it remains available to all owners of The Witcher 3.
