Cardi B has often wondered whether controversy gravitates toward her or if she’s the one igniting the spark.

In an in-depth conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1—broadcast on August 25—the Bronx native explained that her luminous personality tends to provoke intense reactions. That very dynamic inspired the title of her forthcoming sophomore album, Am I the Drama?

“It’s like, does drama chase me? Or am I the drama?” she asked. “I feel like I was born with an aura that shines so brightly it unsettles people. My energy draws everyone’s eyes, and it’s not always in a good way.”

From Schoolyard to Stardom

Cardi says this pattern stretches back to her high-school days and has followed her into the music industry. “There are plenty of female rappers, but for some reason, my presence ruffles feathers. They want to challenge the senior, but they haven’t even reached junior status yet.”

Feuds Past and Future

While she didn’t single anyone out, Cardi’s public spats have included icons like Nicki Minaj, JT of City Girls, Akbar V and Bia. Listeners will have to wait until September 19 to hear if she directly addresses these rivalries on Am I the Drama?.

Ahead of the album’s release, she unveiled the lead single “Imaginary Playerz,” which samples Jay-Z’s 1997 track “Imaginary Players.” Cardi admitted she was anxious about getting his blessing. “I was nervous—what if he didn’t approve it? Then at exactly 4:44 p.m., I got the text saying he was on board. It was surreal.”
