Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist, Caetano Veloso has signed with Sony Music Brasil. The deal was inked last week alongside Sony Music Brasil’s President Paulo Junqueiro, Billboard has learned.
“Caetano Veloso is one of those artists who choose exactly where he wants to be,” Junqueiro said in a statement. “To our luck and joy, he granted us the honor of choosing Sony Music.”
Afo Verde, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Latin Iberia added: “Caetano’s work has always transcended borders, generations, fashions, and categorizations. Caetano is a true icon of world music and his contribution to Brazilian and Latin culture is incalculable. With immense pleasure and pride, the Sony Music family welcomes Caetano Veloso today. Thank you, Caetano, for your trust.”
Born in the state of Bahia, Veloso — whose career has a trajectory that spans over 50 years — formed part of the Brazilian musical movement “Tropicalismo,” which combined theater, poetry, and music, in the 1960s. A nine-time Latin Grammy winner and two-time Grammy winner, Veloso was named the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year in 2012.
Under his new signing contract, Veloso will release his upcoming studio album slated for this year.
“I was very excited to see that the Sony team, the label that is going to release my new album of unreleased songs, is so competent,” Veloso said. “I think this will contribute a lot to the dissemination of this work that I did with such dedication.”
