After a storied eight-year run, Bungie has officially announced the winding down of active development for Destiny 2. In a recent official update, the studio outlined its strategy for the game’s final major content release and provided a glimpse into its long-term vision.

“While our passion for Destiny 2 remains steadfast, it has become clear that following The Final Shape, the time has come for our shared worlds to evolve beyond the current title,” the developers stated. The concluding content update is scheduled for June 9. While active updates will cease, Bungie has confirmed that the game will remain fully playable for the foreseeable future, mirroring the current status of the original Destiny.

Starting June 9, the game will be streamlined into Destiny 2: The Collection, a comprehensive bundle featuring every campaign, Dungeon Key, the 30th Anniversary Pack, and more. Furthermore, all standalone expansions and content modules will receive significant permanent price reductions.

A New Chapter for Bungie

Reflecting on nearly twelve years of exploration, Bungie expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support. “As we shift our focus toward new projects and incubate fresh experiences, June 9 will mark the transition from active service to a new era for our studio,” the team noted. The developers emphasized their commitment to making the final update a welcoming experience for both veteran Guardians and those returning to the fold.

Monument of Triumph and Future Updates

The final update, titled Monument of Triumph, focuses on delivering meaningful narrative closure while rewarding players for their dedication. Guardians can earn legacy Legendary Marks by completing specific Triumphs, which unlock exclusive armor ornaments, weapon engrams, and other unique cosmetics. The update also introduces a refined Director, the permanent inclusion of a challenging new Pantheon, a revamped Portal system, and the beloved return of the Sparrow Racing League.

With the shift in focus, Bungie continues to support its multiplayer extraction shooter, Marathon. As the studio pivots toward new horizons, we want to hear from you: What would you like to see next from the developers? Let us know in the comments below.
