Broadway’s Cabaret to End Run Early After Billy Porter’s Health-Related Departure

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club will conclude its Broadway engagement earlier than planned after Billy Porter unexpectedly exited the production due to health concerns.

On Sunday, producers revealed that the 55-year-old Tony Award–winning star is undergoing treatment for a severe case of sepsis. Medical advisers anticipate a full recovery but have recommended he prioritize rest during his convalescence.

“Billy infused the Emcee role with boundless vitality and artistry,” said ATG Productions’ Adam Speers. “We extend our heartfelt wishes for his speedy recovery and look forward to collaborating with him again soon.”

Consequently, the John Kander and Fred Ebb revival— which opened in April 2024 featuring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin—will now close at the August Wilson Theatre on September 21, nearly a month before its originally scheduled October 19 finale.

Porter and actress-singer Marisha Wallace, who stars as Sally Bowles, joined the Broadway cast on July 22 after their acclaimed stint in London’s West End.

In the production’s remaining weeks, seasoned alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino will rotate in the Emcee role. Performance dates and times will be announced on Cabaret’s official social media channels.

First staged on Broadway in 1966 and immortalized by its 1972 film adaptation, Cabaret follows a diverse cast of characters navigating the boisterous nightlife of Weimar Germany against the ominous rise of the Nazi Party.

Porter’s departure coincides with a downturn in ticket revenue, with weekly grosses averaging around $500,000 and audience occupancy dipping below 70%, according to industry reports.
