Brandi Carlile Returns to Solo Career With New Album “Returning to Myself”

Having taken several years away from her solo endeavors, Brandi Carlile is now preparing to share her eagerly awaited eighth studio collection with fans.

On Wednesday, September 3, Carlile revealed that her forthcoming album, Returning to Myself, is slated for release on October 24 via Interscope Records and Lost Highway. The ten-track opus was produced by Carlile alongside acclaimed collaborators Andrew Watt, Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon.

To mark the announcement, she unveiled the album’s title track accompanied by a striking black-and-white video directed by Floria Sigismondi. Throughout the clip, Carlile wanders along a windswept shoreline and around an imposing metal structure, delivering a raw acoustic performance that underscores the song’s theme: the loneliness—and necessity—of self-reclamation. “Returning to myself is such a lonely thing to do, but it’s the only thing to do,” she sings in the chorus.

Reflecting on the project in an official statement, Carlile admitted that reconnecting with her solo artistry was more daunting than she anticipated. “I’m not my favorite person to spend time with. Returning to myself is not only lonely but painfully dull. So much so that I’d rather not do it. Why is it deemed heroic to untether when the challenging work of togetherness is so much more engaging? Because I don’t want to do it—and that’s precisely why I will,” she explained.

In recent years, Carlile has celebrated collaboration by working with luminaries such as Joni Mitchell on her live Joni Jams series, supporting Tanya Tucker on her album While I’m Living and its accompanying documentary The Return of Tanya Tucker, and joining forces with Elton John for their joint record Who Believes In Angels?.
