Borderlands 4 Developers Explain Why You Can’t Skip Dialogues

Although Borderlands 4 has been praised for its writing—more so than the previous entry—many players are frustrated by the lack of an option to fast-forward the numerous dialogues. Some fans worked around this with an unofficial mod, but a developer warned that skipping conversations can break progression.

The game’s creative director, Graham Timmins, addressed the issue on social media while replying to a fan post that showcased the mod and proposed adding the feature officially so it would reach consoles. Timmins said it’s not that simple.

“I’d urge caution when using that mod. Skipping dialogue can break missions, and they may become irretrievable. Your request is far more complicated and risky than it seems. It stems from how conversations are woven into the quest system. Don’t ask how I know that.”

That last line hints the skip feature was likely trialed during early development, but it produced too many bugs and was ultimately shelved.

In the comments, users suggested a compromise—not removing dialogue entirely, but allowing it to be sped up or scrubbed without desynchronizing mission states. Let’s hope the developers can find a safe solution.
