Borderlands 4 Adds Quest Based on a Writer’s Joke About Soulslike Lore — He Had to Defend His Humor to FromSoftware Fans

Some jokes can strike a nerve with devoted fans.

Borderlands 4 contains a hidden quest titled “Forgive Me.” It nods to a long-standing joke from writer Sam Winkler.

In 2022 the writer posted on social media:

“Dark Souls was revolutionary for games in the sense that, instead of crafting a proper plot, you can now toss in some character with a massive sword called ‘Myrmidon of Loss’ who, with his dying breath, whispers ‘Zanzibart, forgive me,’ and twenty YouTube creators will produce hour-long videos dissecting how deep your lore is.”

That quip drew criticism from some FromSoftware fans, and the writer responded to the backlash by asking detractors to “learn to laugh at what [they] love.”
