Bloodborne
About this game
A traveler arrives in Gothic Yharnam searching for the mysterious “Paleblood” and wakes after a blood transfusion on a night of the Hunt, when a plague turns citizens into beasts. The hunter fights with weapons that change form, interrupts enemy attacks with gunshots, and wins back some health by striking back. FromSoftware released this action RPG in 2015.
The Windows build runs through the bbport port and includes the Game of the Year Edition with The Old Hunters.

- Two weapon forms — Transforming a weapon changes its reach and attacks. A well-timed gunshot interrupts an enemy’s strike and opens a chance for a powerful riposte.
- Striking back after damage — There is a short window after taking a hit to recover some health by attacking. Dodging and stamina management determine when you can keep up the pressure.
- Exploring Yharnam — Streets, courtyards and stairways form a network of routes. Open doors and shortcuts make return journeys shorter, while lanterns lead back to the Hunter’s Dream.
- Building your hunter — Blood Echoes pay for attributes and supplies. Upgrade weapons at the Hunter’s Dream workshop, and recover Echoes dropped on death before dying again.
- Bosses with different rhythms — Huge beasts and fast hunters demand different ranges and timing. Learn the lead-up to their attacks and choose when to dodge or counter.
- Windows port — bbport adds graphics settings and gamepad support. The port is experimental, so compatibility depends on the hardware.
- Multiplayer — Bloodborne has single-player and multiplayer modes. The online features available depend on the PC port version.

In other words: The combat has a fresh twist to it – it’s faster and rewards aggressive behavior, without compromising traditional feel of approaching enemies/ areas/ bosses.
The enemies are still dangerous, areas still reward exploration, NPCs still have slightly branching questlines, and bosses are still challenged as hell (looking at you, Orphan of Kos).
On the negative side, healing items are no longer replenished automatically at lamps – they have to be farmed/bought, which can be a hassle if you’re having a particularly hard time (which you will most likely have multiple times).
There are few games that come close to matching or topping the atmosphere and art direction of Bloodborne. This game is still incredibly gorgeous to look at even though it came out seven years ago. The architecture of places like Central Yharnam and Cainhurst Castle are absolutely stunning and beautiful to look at.
The trick weapons are immensely satisfying and fun to use, and being able to use their differing forms either exclusively or together in a combo adds both a great amount of combinations and replayability to the game.
I’ve been replaying for the umpteenth time recently. It is what I consider a masterpiece. Everything in that game is created to build up the story, setting or theme. Nothing is wasted. The item descriptions, the weapons, even the stats on the armor have lore sprinkles through them. One of the most important aspects of a game, to me, is atmosphere. And, my goodness, Bloodborne is dripping (literally in some cases) with it.
Not to mention the excellent gameplay, astounding music, wonderfully creepy character design. To me, it is a perfect game. And it is my favorite of all time.
