Billy Strings Brings Bluegrass Boogie to ‘King of the Hill’ Theme Song for Series Revival

After a fourteen-year hiatus, the cherished animated sitcom King of the Hill made its grand return on Monday, August 4, premiering its revival season on Hulu. The Emmy-winning series—centered on the pragmatic Hill family of Arlen, Texas—finds propane salesman Hank Hill (co-creator Mike Judge), his tenacious wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy) and their earnest 12-year-old son Bobby (Pamela Adlon) back in action, joined by much of the original voice cast and a reimagined take on the show’s iconic theme.

This time around, bluegrass virtuoso Billy Strings lends his touch, transforming “Yahoos and Triangles”—originally delivered with guitar-driven flair by Arizona rockers The Refreshments—into a string-studded number rich with banjo, fiddle and a spirited acoustic guitar solo.

Billy’s enthusiasm shone through on Instagram, where he teased the new theme with a nod to Hank’s classic one-liner: “An F in English? Bobby, you speak English!”

King of the Hill originally aired for thirteen seasons on Fox from 1997 to 2009. The ten-episode Hulu revival—now streaming in full—follows Hank and Peggy returning to Arlen after a decade in Saudi Arabia, where Hank managed “Arabian propane and Arabian propane accessories” for Aramco. Meanwhile, Bobby thrives as the owner of a Japanese-German fusion restaurant in Dallas, living next door to his best friend, Joseph.

Over the weekend, Strings also joined Dead & Company in Golden Gate Park for their 60th anniversary performances in San Francisco. After opening the Saturday night show, he plugged into an electric guitar to join Bob Weir for a spirited rendition of “Wharf Rat.”
