Backrooms has solidified its place as a cinematic highlight of 2026. Having surpassed $330 million at the global box office, it now stands as the most commercially successful film in A24’s history. For those who haven’t experienced the phenomenon, a perfect opportunity is on the horizon: A24 is bringing an extended cut of the movie to theaters starting July 3.

Titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition, this special release boasts 15 minutes of exclusive footage. Unlike standard extended cuts that weave additional scenes into the narrative, this version preserves the original flow while appending special post-credits sequences crafted by director Kane Parsons, bringing the total runtime to just over two hours. Notably, this extra content will remain a theatrical exclusive, meaning it is not expected to be included in upcoming home media or digital streaming releases.

While the duration of this theatrical run is still under wraps, current schedules at major chains like AMC show screenings in cities like New York continuing through at least July 9.

Emerging from a viral internet “creepypasta” roots, Backrooms has evolved into a bona fide horror sensation. It currently trails only Obsession as the year’s second-highest-grossing horror title and is well-positioned to overtake the latest Star Wars installment in total earnings.

In our deep-dive discussion with filmmaker Kane Parsons—who recently celebrated his 21st birthday—we explored the intricacies of the film’s enigmatic conclusion, the symbolism behind those haunting dead birds, and what the future might hold for potential sequels.
