Atlus’ Persona Gets New Live-Action Adaptation on Netflix

Reports indicate that Netflix is currently in the early stages of developing a live-action series based on the acclaimed Persona role-playing franchise from Atlus. The project is being spearheaded by the production outfit Story Kitchen—the team behind the Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe—and 21 Laps, the venture helmed by Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine producer Shawn Levy.

As per initial details surfaced by Variety, Christopher Monfette has been tapped to write the adaptation and will serve as both showrunner and executive producer. Monfette’s resume is extensive, boasting production and writing credits on high-profile projects such as Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and the upcoming Disney Plus Marvel series, VisionQuest.

While the Persona series remains in development, it underscores Netflix’s aggressive push to translate gaming IP into prestige television. The streamer has seen significant success with animated hits like Arcane and Castlevania, though its track record with live-action game adaptations—such as the short-lived Resident Evil—has been more inconsistent. A BioShock film project also remains on the studio’s horizon.

The Persona saga debuted in 1996 on the original PlayStation. As a distinctive offshoot of the Shin Megami Tensei lineage, it has evolved into a powerhouse franchise featuring four core sequels and a vast library of spin-offs. Following the 2016 launch of Persona 5, fans are now eagerly awaiting the recently announced Persona 6, which currently lacks a firm release window.

Narratively, the series is uniquely positioned for live-action, centering on Japanese high schoolers who bridge the gap between mundane academic life and surreal, supernatural battles against darkness. In the interim, fans can look forward to Persona 4: Revival, a comprehensive remaster of the 2008 classic arriving on February 18, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
