The 28-year-old superstar was having a casual HBO Max and chillax night starting the new Gossip Girl, which premiered on the streaming service on July 8 and has already been enrolled for a sophomore season. But in the pilot episode “Just Another Girl on the MTA,” Kristen Bell’s voice (who was the resident voice of Gossip Girl from The CW’s original teen drama series) wasn’t the only familiar one heard. Grande’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Positions” from her chart-topping sixth studio album of the same title played in the background of the title sequence.
“Excuse me!” she exclaimed during the interview while accidentally startling her dog Toulouse. “Does anyone want to warn me when f—ing titles are going to come in and Kristen Bell’s voice is going to start saying Gossip Girl stuff and my song’s going to be in the background? Does anyone want to just warn me? Because I had a heart attack. You know, like, I was a young girl watching Gossip Girl religiously growing up. And then I’m sitting here…”
The Billboard chart-topping pop superstar, who was once the most-streamed artist on Spotify, still reacts to hearing her music travel across the globe and hit close to home the way it did when she was sitting at home watching TV.
“I sort of smile,” she added, “and keep going.”
