Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Anya Taylor-Joy will be joining the ensemble cast for the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

The actress is set to portray Seren, an entirely new character written specifically for this project. According to reports from Variety, Seren is a formidable elf serving as a lethal operative for King Thranduil. Lee Pace, who famously played the Elven King in The Hobbit, is confirmed to reprise his role.

Directing duties fall to Andy Serkis, who brought Gollum to life in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. The narrative is expected to delve into the backstory briefly mentioned in The Fellowship of the Ring, detailing Aragorn’s grueling seven-week quest to capture the ring-obsessed creature and deliver him to Thranduil.

As Seren is an original addition to Middle-earth lore, her exact narrative function remains a mystery. It is plausible she may join forces with Aragorn during his perilous trek, and given her character’s “lethal” reputation, fans can likely look forward to some high-stakes combat sequences.

While Pace returns to the franchise, the role of Aragorn has been recast, with Jamie Dornan taking over the mantle from Viggo Mortensen. Furthermore, original trilogy icons Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood have been confirmed to return as Gandalf and Frodo Baggins, respectively. Kate Winslet has also joined the cast as Marigol, while Orlando Bloom’s participation as Legolas remains unverified.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s career trajectory continues to soar following breakout performances in genre-defining films like The Witch, Split, and The Menu. Her versatility ranges from superhero turns in The New Mutants to voicing Princess Peach and leading the charge in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Director Andy Serkis remains a pioneer in motion-capture technology. Beyond his iconic turn as Gollum, he has lent his expertise to King Kong and the recent Planet of the Apes revival, while also stepping behind the camera for Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The Hunt for Gollum is slated for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
