In the last decade of anime history, few titles have proven as divisive or as hauntingly beautiful as Made in Abyss. Adapted from Akihito Tsukushi’s celebrated web manga, the series is a masterclass in juxtaposition—blending a whimsical, storybook aesthetic with a relentless, often stomach-churning exploration of the human condition. Following two critically acclaimed seasons and the 2020 feature film Dawn of the Deep Soul, the saga is set to expand further. It has now been officially confirmed that the next chapter, a film titled Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery, will arrive in the fall of 2026.

The announcement surfaced on the series’ official social media channels, accompanied by a teaser trailer that revisited iconic moments from the past while offering a fleeting, chilling glimpse into the horrors yet to come. The teaser is elevated by the signature ethereal and melancholic compositions that have defined the series’ soundscape. Fans will be pleased to know that the original creative team at studio Kinema Citrus is returning, with the central voice cast reprising their roles for this new cinematic venture.

The world of Made in Abyss centers on a singular, gargantuan chasm located on a remote island. This vertiginous pit, known simply as the Abyss, descends into the unknown, harboring priceless relics of lost civilizations and ecosystems teeming with bizarre, often lethal flora and fauna. Daring explorers known as Cave Raiders descend into these depths in search of glory, yet they are haunted by the “Strains of Ascension”—a debilitating physical curse that strikes those attempting to return to the surface. The deeper one ventures, the more agonizing and transformative the curse becomes. The story follows Riko, a determined orphan, as she descends into the pit to find her mother, Lyza the Annihilator, a legendary “White Whistle” who vanished years ago.

Capturing the full scope of the series’ enigmas is a daunting task. Even for those caught up with the manga, the Abyss remains a source of endless speculation, maintaining a vice-grip on its audience despite long production breaks. However, its popularity isn’t solely driven by mystery; the series is renowned for its unflinching brutality. The Abyss is an indifferent, merciless environment where survival often demands horrific sacrifices, and the moral boundaries of its inhabitants are frequently pushed to the breaking point.

As the descent continues in Awakening Mystery, there has never been a more opportune moment to experience the journey from the beginning. For those looking to catch up before the 2026 premiere, Made in Abyss is currently streaming on Prime Video in the U.S. and is available via HIDIVE for international audiences.
