Marvel Rivals has finally overhauled Black Widow, and the difference is night and day. Since the hero shooter’s launch in late 2024, the iconic spy occupied a bizarre, polarizing space on the roster, struggling to mirror her comic book legacy while offering little utility to the team. However, the arrival of season 9 on July 10—which also introduced Jubilee—brought a comprehensive rework that has transformed Natasha into an absolute blast to play.

NetEase hasn't held back with these changes. The developer removed the aim-down-sights (ADS) sniper mode from her base kit, repositioning it as an empowered ultimate. While it still lacks the raw power for a one-shot kill, the scoped shots are now far more forgiving; they feature larger hitboxes, higher damage, and a new piercing property that allows you to strike through multiple targets. Her previous ultimate, the charged pulse shot, has been successfully integrated into her core ability set.

Movement has also seen a significant upgrade: the stamina meter for sprinting is gone, granting her total freedom to dash and execute those signature empowered leaps. To complement this, NetEase added a stylish aerial slam attack that triggers an Area-of-Effect (AoE) strike upon landing. Combined with a snappier fire rate for her primary weapon, these adjustments shift her identity away from a static long-range sniper toward a high-mobility, aggressive skirmisher.

Natasha now excels as a "dive-adjacent" flanker. Without the shackles of stamina management, you can reposition instantly, picking off wounded stragglers or diving deep into the enemy backline to disrupt support heroes before darting back to safety. It’s a high-risk, high-reward playstyle that feels infinitely more satisfying. The increased rate of fire demands better tracking, but once you master the rhythm, her piercing shots can dismantle a clustered team with surgical precision.

The numbers reflect this shift, too. Even with my imperfect 40-50% accuracy rate, I’m consistently pulling in damage figures comparable to heavy hitters like Iron Fist or Mr. Fantastic. It’s clear that in the hands of a skilled marksman, her ceiling is incredibly high.

Thematically, this version of Black Widow feels far more authentic. She has always been defined by her versatility—as a gymnast, a gadget-reliant spy, and a lethal brawler. Focusing her kit on her signature Widow's Bite gauntlets rather than forcing her into a generic sniper archetype is a massive improvement. It feels like NetEase finally stopped trying to force her into a "Widowmaker-lite" role and started leaning into what actually makes Natasha Romanoff a unique Marvel character.

NetEase maintains that one-shot kills are inherently frustrating for victims, explaining why her ultimate remains a wounding ability. However, this is a fair trade-off. Previously, Black Widow struggled to compete with the sheer damage output of other Duelists, hindered by sluggish melee and clunky cooldowns. This overhaul fixes those friction points entirely. For the first time since the game debuted, I’m genuinely excited to lock in Black Widow as my primary pick.
