Adventure Time Enters a Bold New Era Eight Years After Its Finale

One of my perennial favorite videos on YouTube remains the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con retrospective for the conclusion of Adventure Time. In the months leading up to the series finale, the creative team and voice cast gathered to celebrate the show’s legacy, share behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and treat fans to live acoustic renditions of the franchise’s most cherished songs.

Watching John DiMaggio—the iconic voice of Jake the Dog—lead an enthusiastic crowd through a lively reprise of “Bacon Pancakes” is pure joy. Olivia Olson brought a haunting, melancholic depth to her performance of “I’m Just Your Problem,” while series visionary Rebecca Sugar closed the event with a poignant, tear-jerking performance of “Time Adventure” on the ukulele.

Sugar’s performance felt like a profound farewell to an era that defined a generation of animation. During that set, catching a glimpse of DiMaggio visibly moved by the song served as a poignant punctuation mark for the entire series. So, when I had the chance to chat with DiMaggio about the newest spinoff, Side Quests, I was particularly interested in hearing how it feels for him to revisit the series eight years later with a lighter, more whimsical focus that mirrors the show’s original, carefree roots.

As it turns out, the Comic-Con panel still weighs on his mind, albeit for humorous reasons. “I’m honestly just annoyed that I let myself get that vulnerable in front of a live audience,” he joked. “I’m terrified people will start searching for ‘John DiMaggio crying at Comic-Con.'”

Reflecting on the return to the Land of Ooo, DiMaggio’s enthusiasm is palpable. “It’s a thrill,” he said. He had high praise for 17-year-old newcomer Sasha Knight, who steps into the role of Finn. “Sasha is doing an incredible job. It feels like getting the band back together, and it’s honestly just fantastic.”

Adventure Time has proven remarkably resilient. Since its finale, the franchise has expanded through Distant Lands—a thoughtful four-part series that explored Finn’s journey into elderhood—and the more mature, multiverse-bending Fionna and Cake. With a Bubblegum and Marceline project also on the horizon, the universe is clearly as expansive as ever. However, Side Quests charts a distinct path.

Set squarely between seasons 1 and 2, Side Quests—which arrived on June 29 on Hulu and Disney Plus—eschews the heavier, lore-dense narratives of the later seasons. Instead, it offers 20 bite-sized, self-contained adventures that harken back to the show’s roots: simple, episodic fun where the slate is wiped clean every ten minutes.

Visually, the project feels fresh; while the character silhouettes remain iconic, the art direction utilizes a storybook aesthetic—defined by flatter, cleaner linework and more vibrant, textured backgrounds. It’s a deliberate stylistic shift that signals that while we are back in Ooo, this isn’t merely a rehash of the 2010s original.

The franchise is currently branching out in multiple directions: the upcoming Bubblegum and Marceline will carry the torch of the primary narrative, while the preschool-oriented Heyo BMO seeks to capture a younger demographic. Within this diverse landscape, Side Quests occupies a perfect middle ground.

It’s a comfort to step back into the familiar, yet the presentation feels entirely reinvigorated. Eight years after the original series wrapped its run, Finn and Jake are embarking on a new chapter. For those of us who grew up alongside them, it’s heartening to see the adventure continue.
