5 Sacred Things Nintendo Must Preserve in an Ocarina of Time Remake
Given that the initial trailer for Nintendo’s upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake offered little more than a glimpse, it’s no surprise that the community is buzzing with speculation. There is a vast expanse of potential here to debate how this reimagining should tackle one of the most revered—if not the most revered—titles in gaming history. A quick search reveals that many enthusiasts are already clamoring for an open-world shift and a total overhaul of the dungeon layouts.

Leave Hyrule Field alone

If you missed out on the original 1998 release, it’s difficult to convey just how monumental Hyrule Field felt at the time. It acted as an expansive, awe-inspiring hub that captured a sense of scale rivaling modern titles like Breath of the Wild, even if its actual dimensions were modest by today’s standards. While some fans advocate for bloating this space into a fully realized open world, I hope Nintendo shows some restraint. Expanding the geography unnecessarily threatens to turn a tightly paced, masterful adventure into a tedious slog. We need only look at recent missteps in similar genres to see how "bigger" doesn't always translate to "better."

Instead of sprawling landscapes, I’d love to see Nintendo capture that original sense of wonder through technical innovation, such as a seamless, interconnected world free of loading screens. The true magic, however, lies in the art direction—if they can nail the iconic, sun-drenched vistas that made the original so cinematic, then Hyrule Field can remain the beautiful, purposeful expanse it has always been.

2
Keep those traditional dungeons

While the recent open-air Zelda entries are celebrated, they significantly departed from the series' hallmark structure. The absence of classic, labyrinthine dungeons was a notable shift. While those titles introduced novel ideas, they lacked the rigid, puzzle-box satisfaction found in Ocarina of Time. Furthermore, the climactic boss encounters in the original remain unmatched.

To honor the legacy of this title, the traditional dungeon design must remain sacrosanct. Modern visual fidelity can certainly enhance the sense of scale, but the core experience of unraveling a multi-layered dungeon room by room is intrinsic to the game’s DNA. Even the more challenging, intricate temples serve as excellent tests of spatial logic. I welcome modern quality-of-life improvements—like better map tracking—but I would be deeply disappointed to see the complex, puzzling essence of these temples sacrificed, even for the sake of the infamous Water Temple.

While I don’t harbor a vendetta against the weapon-durability mechanics in Breath of the Wild—where the system serves a specific, scavenger-heavy design goal—the implementation of such a system in an Ocarina of Time remake would be a massive mistake. In this game, your equipment feels like an extension of your character. The Master Sword and Hylian Shield are legendary artifacts, akin to Excalibur, meant to be permanent fixtures of your quest.

Ocarina of Time functions like a mythic folktale; it requires a sense of consistency and heroic permanence. While I am fine with the breakable Deku Shield—which adds a layer of tactical resource management—the core arsenal should remain untouched. Let the shield burn if you aren't careful, but don't force me to replace the blade of evil’s bane every ten minutes.

4
The wonderfully obtuse Biggoron's Sword quest must stay

The Biggoron’s Sword is arguably Link’s most formidable asset, and I’m eager to see it rendered in high definition. However, its value isn't just in its damage output—it's in the arduous, convoluted journey required to obtain it. The trade-sequence across Hyrule is delightfully opaque, and that’s precisely what makes the reward feel earned.

While some subtle UI improvements to help track the quest chain would be welcome, the process should remain a "hidden" achievement. It is a secret meant to be discovered, a testament to the player's dedication, and I hope Nintendo resists the urge to streamline it into insignificance.

It’s a common sentiment that Navi’s incessant "Hey, listen!" cries should be toned down. As an overeager helper, her interruptions are legendary for all the wrong reasons. Yet, I argue that she is essential to the game's identity. There is a tendency in modern remakes to "fix" every perceived flaw, but in doing so, creators often strip away the eccentric character of the original work.

Navi’s nagging is part of the charm; it’s a cultural touchstone that has evolved into a meme precisely because it was so gratingly persistent. Whether you love her or despise her, she is as much a part of Ocarina of Time as the Master Sword itself. If Nintendo hopes to preserve the spirit of this classic, they must leave some of its jagged edges intact—Navi’s interruptions included.
