The developers didn’t instantly land on the gameplay formula that has kept players engaged for years.

An unusual build of the original The Sims recently appeared online. It’s thought to be the demo that helped prove the life-simulator concept was viable.

The creator of the YouTube channel LUCPIX showcased the gameplay footage, claiming this build was produced after the 1998 demo.

The blogger also pointed out that this The Sims 1 prototype (1999) is the earliest known “working” version to completely abandon scripted storylines — leaving players to craft their families’ narratives without scripted tutorials or prewritten dialogues telling them which Sim to kiss to “win.”

If the build is authentic, the community may have uncovered the first — or one of the earliest — proofs of concept for The Sims’ gameplay formula as players recognize it today.
