Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader It's an interesting departure for Swedish horror director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out), who proves he has more tricks up his sleeve than just things that go bump in the night. Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Pretty bland... A little too light, fluffy, and negligible. Sep 27, 2019 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine ...[T]his film melds the unpretentious, dreamy joys of old-time comic books with the sly, rambunctious humor of Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon featurettes... May 10, 2019 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews Every member of the cast gives a strong performance, but Zachary Levi steals the show. His whimsical attitude, reckless personality, and rich facial expressions are guaranteed to entertain you for most of the runtime. Rated: B+ Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Kate Boyle InSession Film Overall, Shazam! is a fun movie with mature themes sprinkled in. It embraces the camp and humor this character needs to succeed on the big screen, even poking fun at previous DC heroes and films. Rated: B Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Jonathan Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast A really warm-hearted film, and I think it works so well because it's all about wish-fulfillment. ... Mike Nice world building movie. It had elements for all ages to be entertained with and Zach Levi is always awesome. Can't wait for the sequel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/22 Full Review Michael cool but it was missing some energy. need to improve costumes Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/21 Full Review Jason O So much potential. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review J G It was…okay. I like these kinds of movies, and I still had a hard time getting through it - yet it has lots of nice moments and ideas, too. My biggest issue is that Zachary Levi apparently was never a teenager and doesn't know how to act like one. It's like he's playing a caricature of a caricature of Tom Hanks in Big. Meanwhile Tom Hanks was playing a sheltered undersized 13 year old, and Zachary Levi is supposed to be a hardened streetwise 14 year old foster kid - who has apparently never tasted beer or talked to an adult. The kids all give great performances, and I have to imagine this is also a director's choice. I don't understand why Levi isn't even trying to act anything like Asher Angel. It's as if the two never had a chance to meet because of scheduling issues, so Levi is just guessing what an average 14 year old acts like. Anyways, high reviews so maybe others don't feel this way. Totally pleasant movie, just reset your expectations. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Christian W This is a movie that takes the feeling of always wanting to be a superhero and Zachary Levi really does land that performance very well. Almost everyone can relate to the themes of looking for oneself and then finding it in your family. The fight at the end feels like it is earned and not manufactured just because. I do not enjoy the villain very much or his motivations, so this movie loses some props with me, but for the short life of the DCEU, this was one of my favorite films if not my favorite. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Jason R Enjoyable for the whole family, some comedy moments mixed with serious scenes Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
