In a new interview with El Mundo, Thom Yorke discussed his plans for 2019 and his work on a new solo album. As translated by Pitchfork, Yorke said, “I didn’t have any desire to make very political music, but everything I do tends to go that way anyway. I’m trying to finish up a record with Nigel [Godrich], and it’s going in that direction. It’s something that’s always there.”

Describing the sound of the record—which would be his first solo effort since 2014’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, not counting the upcoming Suspiria score—Yorke responded, “It’s very electronic, but it’s different from what I’ve done until now. The method has been the opposite of depending upon the computer. It’s a strange process in which we construct a song in the studio, break it apart, we reconstruct it with a live mix and it turns out completely differently, and that’s when we record. We have improvised many sounds and effects. It has been a very strange way of making a record, which is very exciting.”

Elsewhere, Yorke talked about his experience scoring his first film. “I promised to do [the Suspiria soundtrack] because [director] Luca [Guadangigno] insisted, and I started a journey that ended up taking a year.” The soundtrack is due out tomorrow. Today, Yorke shared a new song from the album, “Unmade.” Check it out below. He also recently released “Hands Off the Antarctic,” a new track in conjunction with Greenpeace.
