When the 2022 Grammy nominees were announced, Olivia Rodrigo’s Album of the Year nod for Sour gave Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, and St. Vincent their own nominations for their roles as co-writers. That was the result of a crediting error, the Recording Academy has said, as The New York Times reports.
Back in July, Rodrigo’s team gave those three artists writing credits on “Deja Vu” after Rodrigo said Swift’s “Cruel Summer” had inspired her track. Although Swift, Antonoff, and St. Vincent are technically considered to have contributed to “Cruel Summer,” its influence on “Deja Vu” is categorized as an interpolation, meaning certain elements were recreated or referenced in the studio. As such, the writers do not qualify for nomination, according to the Academy’s rules. Swift and Antonoff are still nominated for Album of the Year for Evermore.
Swift and Antonoff also have writing credits on the Sour song “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back,” which interpolates the Reputation track “New Year’s Day”; for the same reason, that contribution does not earn Swift and Antonoff nominations either.
