Jack White shared the below statement tonight in response to a homophobic incident that occurred during his show in at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada. On Friday (November 2), concertgoer Allyson MacIvor was asked not to kiss her female friend during White’s performance, CBC News reports. “It’s 2018 now and two people expressing affection shouldn’t have to hide,” White said in an Instagram post that depicts what he describes as a “lesbian couple sharing a kiss at a Beatles concert” in 1964. “The news that two women were stopped from kissing during my show in Edmonton really disappointed me.”

“At the next show in Calgary I dedicated the song ‘Love Interruption’ to the two women and encouraged everyone in the crowd to kiss their loved ones,” White continued. “Let’s promote love and acceptance wherever and whenever we can.”

According to CBC News, a Rogers Place usher approached MacIvor and her friend, physically inserting herself between them. “I embraced my girlfriend, and some staff member came in between us, and she said ‘This is not allowed here,’” said MacIvor, who identifies as gay. “It was very violating and invasive.” MacIvor and her friend spoke to the Rogers Place manager, who “apologized profusely,” and have since received an apology from the show’s organizers Oilers Entertainment Group.
