Next week, on April 24, Questlove releases his new book Creative Quest (via Ecco). Along with the print edition, there’s an audiobook featuring new music from Questlove and members of the Roots, as well as guest readings by Fred Armisen, Tariq Trotter, Norm Macdonald, and others.

In a new snippet from the Creative Quest audiobook, Quest tells the story of the first time he saw a DJ set by Aba Shanti-I in London. As he describes the producer’s process, Quest’s own voice begins echoing through a dub delay effect while drums and music rise and fall in conjunction with his storytelling. Listen below.

Creative Quest is Questlove’s “guide to creativity.” In it, he offers wisdom gained from his career, as well as lessons learned from “forefathers such as George Clinton, collaborators like D’Angelo, or like-minded artists including Ava DuVernay, David Byrne, Björk, and others.”

In 2016, Quest released the book something to food about: Exploring Creativity with America’s Most Innovative Chefs, which got nominated for the 2017 James Beard Foundation Book Award for Nonfiction.
