Update on Rocket League Esports Schedule
Hey everyone,
We want to apologize for the PsyNet and server issues we encountered this weekend, it's frustrating for everyone involved. With that being said, there are a couple of updates for the RLCS and for the Rival Series.
RLCS: Both NA and EU RLCS matches for Week 1 have been postponed. With PsyNet issues still ongoing, we've made the call to postpone all RLCS matches this week. Competitive integrity is of the utmost importance and we don't want players and teams playing on shaky ground. We're currently planning how we'll reschedule the matches and we should have an update for you early next week in that regard.
Rival Series: The Rival Series Play-Ins have been moved to February 8 and 9. Please see the Rival Esports tweet here for more info. This means that there will not be a Rival Series broadcast on February 7 and that we'll have more information on Rival Series scheduling soon.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work through these issues.

At this point I think everyone's pissed. Game devs trying to figure it out and get Google servers working, esports team having to work around it, broadcast team flew out this weekend for pretty much nothing, excited fans have to wait, players' schedules get messed up.. just an all around shitty scenario.
I wasn't pissed. But I am starting to suffer from withdrawal.
Fortunately The Clash finals still happened this weekend, so I got to see something at least.
Fair play postponing. Would be awful for lag to ruin games. Absolutely shite for the fans but it's not you guys fault.
EDIT: I posted this before anyone knew it was a PsyNet problem. So yeah, it's still shitty
That's our main concern overall. We wanted to get this out there as soon as possible so that players, teams, and fans could start to make adjustments.
Good on you guys for getting the news out early for rlrs and tomorrow!
That’s the thing, it IS their fault. Look at what was posted on discord, you can find it on a post on here. The issues are not with the servers. According to Psyonix Devin, they upgraded PsyNet on Thursday, 2 DAYS before their biggest event of the year. In what world does that make sense? They had the entire off season to do this and decide that right before RLCS is the perfect time to do so. So yes, it is their fault. They’re 110% to blame.
Seems like they didnt spend enough time in development before moving to production. Probably come back and say they didnt have amount of data that they needed when 100k people were playing at once to simulate the error they eventually ran into.
That’s probably exactly what happened, which is something that should’ve been anticipated. It’s like when a new game has an online beta, they’re stress testing their product. Psyonix decided that the 2 days prior to their biggest event was the perfect time to stress test their PsyNet upgrade. This failure is solely on them.
This is somewhat off topic, and I could be totally wrong, but honestly, it seems like someone high up at Psyonix wants to kill the esport scene for this game. Between the limitations they put on community organizers, the fact that they absolutely refuse to invest in the esport scene and then this fiasco, which was 100% avoidable. I highly doubt that the people who are running the company are THIS incompetent. As someone else posted in another thread on here, the esport might not be profitable for them, which is why they push new cosmetics over anything remotely concerning the esport side of Rocket League. They’re a business first and foremost, and their goal is to make money, which clearly comes from TW Fennecs, Zomba’s, Draco’s and Octane’s, not from RLCS. Now they can’t just shut down the esport scene without losing all credibility with their consumers, so what’s the next best thing? Handicap it and slowly kill it until people just don’t care anymore. They’ve absolutely nailed the handicapping part, now they’re managing to kill what’s left with this nonsense, which was so easily avoidable.
Crazy thing is they are letting a small group of people in to play so they can collect data to identify the issue. Why not roll out these upgrades to a small group of people In The first place to ensure the major upgrade goes through okay?
Exactly! 1) They know you’re upgraded an integral system to the entire game 2) They know RLCS is right around corner 3) season 8 closed out on December 15th, that literally gave them a month and half to do this the right way
Remove the tinfoil hat for a moment and trust Hanlon's Razor. Psyonix surely understands how good a healthy esports scene can be for their game. There is no way anybody in their right mind would try to intentionally sabotage an esports event by bricking their entire game.
Thank you for introducing me to Hanlon's Razor!
And everything else they’ve done to sabotage/handicap the esports scene?
Yeah that's why they expanded NA and EU to ten teams, extended the broadcast due to that, continue to push esports content for new teams, etc. Take off the foil hat, they obviously care about the esports scene and delayed this week to make sure they do it right.
If I didn't religiously watch RLCS, there's no way I'd be this into playing the game. It drives business to the game itself and therefore the item shop, so financially it doesn't make sense to kill it.
r/conspiracy
Point out one point I made that’s incorrect.
I doubt they want to kill the scene. I mean if they are not happy with the esport money, it would be way easier to go hands off and let the tourney organisations proceed by themselves... It makes no sense to put that much effort in something you don't want to do.
Really hope they change the prize pool restrictions though; how the hell are they suppose to reap the supposedly great benifits from the Olympic tourney if it all bottlenecks at their door steps...
This is exactly what I've been saying, Psyonix is making some weird moves and I don't like em at all.
Counter point: how do you know that upgrade didn't involve some kind of critical vulnerability fix? Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and patch
So why wasn’t it done weeks ago? You can’t tell me there was some critical vulnerability that they JUST found out about. I’m not saying the upgrade wasn’t needed, I’m saying the fact the upgrade was done this close to RLCS is moronic, at best.
And according to Psyonix Devin, the upgrade was to their PsyNet and data management.
Why? Is there a rule about founding new vulnerabilities in your applications being forbidden in January 2020 or something?
Yeah I saw that an hour or so after I posted the comment
In the world where their decisions have yet to haunt them like this one did, I suppose. Let's fucking hope it's the last time this occurs.

Did you bother to read what Psyonix Devin posted? I’m guessing not. Come back when you do. It has nothing to do with the servers.
More time for practice! 😅
Name checks out :D
It’s disappointing, but I’m enjoying the promptness and the transparency.
Thank you very much for being vocal with the ongoing troubles throughout the recent days. Please keep communications going, it's highly appreciated.
At this point I'm just glad you guys let us know. Appreciate you guys, keep being amazing
I feel this was handled professionally and promptly. You cut the stream short immediately and not give any more fluff so we don't waste any more time and can go about our day. Thank you for that. I appreciate the notification, and I think this is a Google-wide issue.
These are the kind of issues, however, that make people really scoff at esports. I hope we can resolve this and come to a more reliable way to avoid these issues.
Edit: Apparently it's a PsyNet problem as well.
They said it was the psynet update though
I dunno... we have thousands of servers running on Google cloud and use pretty much every Google service imaginable and I didn’t get one alert or see anyone if our company chat say there was an issue. Maybe they are happy to let it get blamed on Google but I’m skeptical.
Your comment is the equivalent of saying, I have plenty of hamburgers in my town, so how could there possibly be a world hunger problem.
No need for forced analogies. There were no reported incidents on google cloud services today.
Yes, there were. A simple search would show that and I've also linked to one. Just because you saw no problem doesn't mean a problem didn't exist. Comprende?
https://status.cloud.google.com/summary - nothing! They don’t hide their incidents when they happen.
You guys made the right call. Thank you for being brave and adressing these issues. I told you guys you have an amazing community behind you which is understanding and loving, you just got to communicate more. Good luck for next weekend!
The quickness of the update is greatly appreciated!
[H]sadness [W]servers back
Was this a result of the update a couple days ago? Timing really sucks here
It's crazy how widespread these server issues are, among so many other games.
Thank you for your quick reaction and communication Ian, it's really appreciated.
As much as it sucks for everyone involved and given the situation, this is the right call — risking lag ruining matches tomorrow isn’t worth it. Thank you for the quick updates, especially the early decision to postpone tomorrow’s matches to make sure this doesn’t happen on such short notice again.
Also, it’s definitely appreciated how much y’all are communicating with the community right now. More of this transparency, please!
Thank you for the quick update. It's unfortunate, no doubt, but hopefully you learn and grow as a company from this. I've mentioned this before, but you should blog a technical postmortem. This is how most of the big, respectable, engineering organizations operate and there's no reason why a game developer can't do the same. I think it would demonstrate a level of professionalism -- scaling a game like Rocket League is not easy and you should talk about the challenges.
Thanks for letting us know! 👍🏻
spoodSad
This really sucks, for all parties involved, but I totally understand! I want to watch the best players in the world be at their best.
lmaoo the casters stalled for ages
It's kind of shit that they postponed it but it's better than having shitty servers
Which is why you rolled out a database migration right before the start, right? Amazing.
Thank you Ian
That’s what you get for booting lawler 😂
That’s an absolutely flawed way of thinking.
I can’t prove god exists, but if I believe he does, am I wrong?
What the fuck are you taking about
Well, it's simple. Just imagine the fridge would be filled with trash bins. Wouldn't then the dog visit its apple at school?
Use your brain for a second, okay? He said that because I believe someone is handicapping the esports scene but can’t prove that someone is handicapping the esports scene, I’m inherently wrong. So I responded with that if I believe god is real, but can’t prove it, am I automatically wrong? I know you’re probably in high school, but try to comprehend.
You can't disprove God's existence, just like you can't disprove that there is a massive conspiracy within Psyonix to destroy the esports scene. But you can look at what we do know and determine that both things are extremely unlikely to be true.
I wouldn’t say extremely unlikely. In my very first post, I did say that I could be totally wrong, but look at the facts.
Can we agree that Psyonix refuses to allow community organizers the ability to host events with prize pools above $5,000?
Can we agree that instead of investing time and money into the esports scene, Psyonix chooses to push new cosmetic items in their item shop?
Can we agree that despite the community asking for better servers for quite a while now, Psyonix has done absolutely nothing? Instead choosing to upgrade their PsyNet 2 days before RLCS.
Can we agree that Psyonix wholeheartedly prioritized money over their consumer/fan base when they released the TW Dominus right before announcing that they were ending support for Linux/Mac users?
Psyonix has shown time and time again that all they care about is reaching into our wallets. They won’t fix the servers, and if you scroll through reddit, you’ll find quite a few people complaining about essentially playing with latency issues since the blueprint update, but they’ll sure as shit release a TW version of something every few weeks. I don’t know what their financials are like, but if they aren’t making money from the esport side of the game, what I’m saying is not out of the realm of possibility.
Think about it, let’s say you’re a business owner and you have two products. One product is fairly cheap and brings in a bunch of money, whereas the other product has high production costs and you hardly make any profit from it. Which product are you going to want to focus on?
You're so entitled it's hilarious
For suggesting you attempt to use a deeper thought process? If you think that’s entitled, you’re so soft it’s hilarious.
