Marvel Heroes is shutting down

Disney is shutting down all Marvel Heroes games.

The media conglomerate, which owns Marvel, has said that it's cutting ties with Marvel Heroes developer Gazillion Entertainment. This sudden change was confirmed in an email by a Marvel representative to Kotaku.

"We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down," the representative said.

"We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available."

It's a bit of a bizarre turn for Marvel Heroes, which was first released as a PC-only MMO in 2013. The Diablo-esque loot RPG recently came to consoles for the first time, as part of the Marvel Heroes Omega update, which also overhauled the PC version.

It seemed, for a while at least, that the game was growing now more than ever. But, as the site points out, the writing had been on the wall. Developer Gazillion Entertainment missed four of its weekly blogs, and largely stopped talking about game updates. A Thor: Ragnarok DLC tie-in - something all Marvel movies got in Marvel Heroes - didn't release as promised.

At the time of writing, Marvel Heroes Omega remains available on Steam, and an official shuttering date has not been announced.
