The Nintendo Switch version of Doom actually runs well - report

The idea of playing Doom on a Nintendo Switch may sound bizarre, especially if you're playing it on the go, but it appears developers managed to get the game running pretty well on Switch hardware regardless.

The Doom Switch version was one heck of a surprise announcement. But it wasn't until the press went hands-on with it that everyone's fears about the quality of the port dissipated.

Our very own Alex was surprised by how well it ran and how fun it was to play on a handled device. And that seems to be the running theme with press previews of the port so far.

Digital Foundry is one such outlet. Being technical-minded than most, the site dug a little deeper and came away with more positive impressions than they thought they would have going in. The first thing they noticed - outside of the downgraded visuals - was the 30fps target, as opposed to the full 60fps available on PS4, and Xbox One.

Although the demo largely kept to the 30fps target, it achieved this by sacrificing in other areas. The preview only covers handheld mode, which is what the press were allowed to see. To that end, the resolution seemed noticeably low, with a reliance on a dynamic resolution technique that results in some blurry parts of the demo, according to the report.

Some of this is apparently in the off-screen footage that came out of the event, as you can see in Nintendo World Report TV's video below:

Texture quality is poor, too, only equivalent to PC's lowest settings. Curiously, many of the post-processing features used on other consoles appear intact, such as depth of field and motion blur. The report noted some stuttering issues as well, though without further analysis, it's hard to pin down exactly what causes them.

With that said, the Switch performs admirably for the hardware. Digital Foundry even tried to mirror the Switch's specs with a PC build to see how the PC version would fare, and the results weren't in favour of PC.

You can read the rest of the report through the link above. Doom is out this holiday on Switch.
