What are some games that look like they could have belonged on a different generation of consoles.

Doom 3 ran on the original Xbox fairly well. It could have been (and was eventually released) on the 360.

God of War II, a PS2 game. Could have passed for early 7th gen:

And my personal favorite:

Black, a PS2/Xbox game. This was released after the 360 launched. If I wasnt informed and someone told me it was a 360 game I would have believed them back then.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was an incredible looking game for the original Xbox

And of course, Silent Hill 3. Which even outside of *that* GIF, was a really good looking game for the PS2.

Crysis 3 specifically, it provided a PS4/Xbone era visuals before the generation actually started. Eventhough it was on PS360 the game on PC was so far beyond those consoles that it was not even funny. Even today Crysis 3 released on current gen consoles would be considered a looker.

Another one from back in the day was Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Chronicles of Riddick.

Black was a game that looked like it belonged in PS360 era (at least early ones) rather than PS3/Xbox.

Doom 3 is a good one. played it for the first time in 2012 or so and thought "yeah... this cannot be an 8 year old game". granted it was the BFG edition but it's not like that was lightyears ahead of what the original game pulled off in 2004

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was pretty mindblowing on OG Xbox at the time. It obviously made heavy use of dynamic resolution to achieve that graphics on the console.

Chaos Theory on Xbox just destroyed graphically everthing I have seen on ps2. It was literally a punch in the balls. Oh Riddick and Doom 3 also were unbelievable

Wow, I didn't get that impression at all! I don't think Crysis 3 was even as good looking as other PS3 games like Wipeout or Uncharted 2/3z

If we're taking the premise quite literally, I really can't think of any games that actually, in retrospect, appeared to be another generation up from their own gen. The games mentioned in the OP certainly look representative of their gens.

If we're just going to point out games that really pushed visual boundaries in ways that wowed us when they came out, Gears of War 1 stands out in my mind. It felt like something truly different, presentation-wise, from everything else I'd played up to that point.

Conker for Xbox OG also comes to mind. The WW2 level really impressed me when I was young.

GTA V, Halo 4, TLOU and Beyond Two Souls all look a generation ahead of anything previously on those systems imo.

They all pass for early current gen games in their Remasters.

The original Chronicles of Riddick game was absolutely incredible looking on the Xbox. It looked better than most 360 launch games.

Flatout: Head On (PSP)

latest

To me, I don't consider it a PSP game, even to this day; it's more like a PS3 game or if it's like Sony make PS3 Portable in the last gen and this game uses the full potential power of the console.. The graphics look incredible on PSP with the full detail of tracks, vehicle models, shadows, reflection, bloom and sun rays...

Besides graphics, this game has impressive technical stuff that happen on fly; a lot of objects/props in track to run over, the flying debris, dirt and effects, destruction of the vehicles with detachable parts, and ragdoll in the gameplay.. ..

How was this not mentioned yet?
that could be a current gen title and not look out of place.

i think GTA V/Halo 4/TLOU were developed with the next gen in mind which is why they release for current gen too. they just pushed out what they could for PS3/360 and then released it again on current gen.

I felt Halo 1 to Halo 2 was a huge leap on the original Xbox. Same with The Last of Us on PS3... doesn't surprise me it got an early PS4 Remaster.

Super Mario Bros 3

I Robot arcade game

Not graphics but plot of MGS2 was years ahead of its time

A lot of the screens in the thread are for high resolution pc versions or emulated versions completely unrepresentative of what the games actually looked like when they came out on og consoles or for most people's pcs

I definitely remember being confused about whether Chrono Cross was a PS1 or PS2 game from screens.

Beyond: Two Souls

Throughout the entire game, I was repeatedly amazed that I was playing this on a PS3.

Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS more or less looked like a PS360 game apart from the resolution. Might be the best looking game across both last gen handhelds if talking 3D games. Well ahead of anything else on the 3DS and it was an early title.

I remember when Gears of War 1 Came out, it was celebrated as the best Looking game ever. It was really a discussion point. However, in threads like these hardly ever i see the game mentioned.
