Ban The Bomb: Unlocking MGS V's Secret Nuke Event
A not-so-secret secret
We're about 11,000 nukes away from Snake and pals throwing a shindig in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain [official site] - disarming 11k of them, that is. You might've seen a while back that folks had uncovered cinematics celebrating nuclear disarmament, but it wasn't entirely clear what they were or how to trigger them. Welp, Konami have now confirmed that, as guessed, it'll trigger if every nuclear weapon players have built is destroyed (they're part of the Forward Operating Base PvP invasion stuff). They're issuing daily updates on disarmament progress too.
Building nukes in The Phantom Pain gives you a powerful deterrent, meaning only players with a high amount of heroism or nukes of their own will be able to invade you. You can also steal nukes from other players, and disarm them if you want. Metal Gear Solid has always been pret-ty overtly anti-nuke, and Kojima Productions have a treat waiting if the whole world disarms (well, or is forced to).
Konami explain we'll be treated to the anti-nuke special event - which is not an alternate ending - under these conditions:
1. You must have completed Mission 31.
2. You must not own or be currently developing a nuclear weapon. If you have any nukes in stock, you must dismantle them.
3. Certain conditions related to nuclear proliferation must be met on the regional server for your corresponding gaming platform (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC(Steam)).
4. All nuclear weapons on the regional server corresponding to your console or platform must have been dismantled. In other words, the amount of nukes on your platform's server must be equal to 0.
How close are we? PC players owned 36,552 nuclear weapons on November 1st and by the 25th were down to 15691. The Metal Gear Twitter started posting daily updates following this announcement, and the latest saw players down to 11,473 as of yesterday. There was always fewer nukes on consoles, and some platforms are now in double-digit figures. Some players seem to have launched eagerly into forceful disarmament, invading FOBs to steal and break down people's nukes. Keep up the good work, gang. If you've got one yourself, perhaps you'd like to scrap it?
