I thought this series was absolutely fantastic - I’m not a horror fan but I loved this show, probably because it was thought provoking and told a fascinating story. I hope they produce more.

I tried, seriously tried, to make it through this entire series. I made it 75% of the way thru before giving up. My daughter recommended this to me. She thinks this director and his girlfriend are the best. I sat through the entirety of Midnight Mass and was left thinking, is that the best you have?? There's only one reason I stuck it out this far: Timothy Hutton! He should be given an Oscar for putting up with these script-readers!

How this series can even use the title or call itself an adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s classic novella is a mystery to me. The only thing it has in common with her ghost story is the title, and absolutely nothing else, not even thematically does it attempt to emulate the “source”; it is essentially an original story with a borrowed title. The story that’s dreamed up for this series doesn’t match the quality of Jackson’s tale, but it is none the less quite engrossing, moody and atmospheric and at times quite scary. On the technical side it is incredibly well done with the cinematography and set design being the true stars of the show. Despite a god awful “happy ending” that really dampens a lot of what came before, this is definitely worth a watch on a cold Autumn night….once. Afterwards please go read the book.

This was the second time I’ve watched this series and there is nothing about it that I don’t love. The storytelling was simply perfect. The emotions—heartache, anger, pain, love, longing, fear—it was all so well written and performed.
On a more technical note—I loved that for a horror, the lighting was so well managed and the cinematography was absolutely excellent.

Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic novel is nothing short of exceptional, delivering a deeply moving exploration of grief, trauma, and family bonds alongside some of the most chilling moments ever seen in a horror series.
What sets Hill House apart is its ability to balance terror with tenderness. Each member of the Crain family is richly developed, their individual struggles woven into a narrative that is as heartbreaking as it is horrifying. The performances are stellar across the board, with standout turns from Victoria Pedretti, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas.
Flanagan’s direction is masterful. The series is packed with technical brilliance, from its breathtaking single-take episode "Two Storms" to its subtle use of background ghosts that reward eagle-eyed viewers. The atmosphere is thick with dread, but it’s the emotional resonance that lingers long after the final credits roll.
The scares are effective, but they’re never cheap—every haunting moment serves the story, enhancing its themes of loss, guilt, and the inescapable grip of the past. At its core, The Haunting of Hill House isn’t just a horror story; it’s a deeply human one, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.
