Unfortunately no, the new 25-inch AOC monitor doesn’t let you choose between a 1080p resolution at 240Hz and 1440p at 144Hz. Sorry.

Several sites have reported AOC’s new AGON AG251FG gaming monitor allows the user to make the choice between 1080p gaming with a lightning-quick 240Hz refresh rate and 1440p at the still-pretty-damn-quick 144Hz. The idea being that it would give users the option of gunning for a faster refresh rate in intense racing or FPS games before relaxing in front of the beautiful vistas of The Witcher 3 at a much higher resolution.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this isn’t the case.
We checked in with AOC and they’ve confirmed the monitor simply has a native resolution of 1080p and runs at 240Hz – still a neat trick if you ask us – but doesn’t switch at your behest to an alternate high-res setting. The misreporting is a result of an error on AOC’s website that displayed incorrect specs which didn’t jive with the 1080p at 240Hz figure given in the press release for the monitor.
The new monitors will though make use of a fresh type of TN panel from AU Optronics. We’ve had issues with TN panels before because of their weak colours and washed-out images, but AOC claim the newer design will feature much more accurate colour representation and improved clarity. We’ll leave our pitchforks in the cupboard until we get our hands on one. The 240Hz AOC monitor is expected to be out in the UK in August this year, with an MSRP of £519, so we’ll know for sure then.
The moral of the story is to not believe everything you read on the internet, people. Except maybe from us.
