Raft has four unlockable characters that appear on story islands, and you’ll have to find them to play as them. While you should unlock most of them just from completing the story, you may accidentally skip over them. Our Raft unlockable character guide lists out where to find the four characters and how to unlock them.
Raft unlockable character locations
How to unlock the four optional characters

When you talk to the character, they’ll say something about heading back to your raft with you and they will unlock for every online player. If one of your buddies is not online at the time you talk to them, they will have to talk to the character themselves. Once you unlock the character in one save file, you’ll have them unlocked permanently.
You can change the character you play as from the main menu screen. The characters have no differences outside of their visuals.
We list out where to find the characters in order below.
Tala in the Radio Tower
The first character, Tala, is at the top of the Radio Tower, which is the first area you’ll head to as part of the story. She is impossible to miss, as she’s just sitting in the chair at the top of the tower.
Johnny on Balboa Island
The second character, Johnny, is hanging out in Relay Station 6 on Balboa Island sitting on a mattress.
Elaine in Tangaroa
Elaine is in Tangaroa, but is only accessible at the very end of the island’s story, after the top of Tangaroa launches off. She is found inside the dome piece that launched off, secured to a chair.
Shogo in Temperance
Shogo can be found at the very end of Temperance’s story. After you fix the reactor and head to the final part to get the next coordinates, Shogo is hanging out in the last room on the left inside of a tube. Interact with the computer next to his tube to get him to stumble out and join you.
