All Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a Tera Type, and usually, it mimics a Pokémon’s original type. But the neat thing about Tera Types is that the types don’t have to match: You can have a Quaxley (typically water-type) that’s a fire Tera Type, for instance. It’s a unique mechanic that stands poised to shake up long-held Pokémon strategies in a major way. You can find Pokémon with differing Tera Types during Tera Raid Battles, but the Pokémon and Tera Type are random — you get what you battle.

Make some weird or powerful Pokémon type mixes

There is a way to change your Pokémon’s Tera Type, though.
How to change a Pokémon’s Tera Type
Changing a Pokémon’s Tera Type is as easy as visiting an NPC, but you’ll need to meet some requirements before getting there. The first: Defeat Normal-type gym leader Larry at Treasure Eatery in Medali. When you beat him, you’ll be able to talk to the chef behind the sushi bar, who will offer to change your Pokémon’s Tera Type.
You can change any Pokémon’s Tera Type so along as you have 50 Tera Shards available. You’ll collect these around Paldea, largely from beating Pokémon of the same Tera Type in Tera Raid Battles. Sometimes, people will give you these as rewards, too: Tyme, the math teacher at the academy, gives you 50 Rock Tera Shards if you see her classes through and get close to her.
