Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Medali gym (Larry) guide

How to smack down Larry’s normal-type team

Medali is a small town in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that serves as home for the very average gym leader, Larry.

Larry specializes in normal-type Pokémon, making him easy to beat if you just slam him with non-ghost-type attacks.

If you’re going in order from weakest-to-strongest gyms, this will be your fifth gym battle.

Medali gym challenge (Order the secret menu item!)

Your task for the Medali gym challenge is to figure out what the secret menu item is at the local favorite restaurant. You can just guess repeatedly, but battling trainers who are also taking the test nearby will give you hints as to what the dish is.

For one of the hints, you’ll have to battle Adara, a child near the restaurant. Her party is as follows:

  1. Gumshoos, level 34 (normal)
  2. Greedent, level 34 (normal)

She will tell you to look for the “odd one out” at an ice cream stand. The local ice cream stand has “grilled rice balls” for sale, notably with lemons on top.

A second trainer on the outskirts of town, Gisela, will also give you a hint if you beat her. Her party is as follows:

  1. Ursaring, level 34 (normal)

She tells you to look for “a dark spot surrounded by stairs.” The colosseum half-dome that she’s standing by has a dark area gated off. Interact with it to see a sign that says “Fire Blast.”

A third trainer by the strip of restaurants named Santiago will also challenge you to a battle in exchange for a clue. His party is as follows:

  1. Dunsparce, level 34 (normal)

He’ll say to listen close to the “blue bird Pokémon,” a.k.a the chattering Talkabilly on the pilot’s head nearby. The Talkabilly will say “medium.”

Enter the restaurant and repeat all that back to the waiter to start Larry’s gym battle.

Larry gym leader battle

Larry uses normal-type Pokémon. His party is as follows:

  1. Komala, level 35 (normal)
  2. Dudunsparce, level 35 (normal)
  3. Staraptor, level 36 (flying/normal with normal Tera Type)

Larry gym battle counters

Larry uses normal-type Pokémon, which only have one weakness: fighting-type moves.

His pocket pick, Staraptor, is particularly grating because the flying-type moves it knows will counter your fighting-type Pokémon. There are no other counters for normal-types, so just avoid using grass- or fighting-types against it.

That being said, you can just hammer down most of Larry’s team with your strongest moves, except ghost-type moves, which have no effect on normal-types.

If you’re still struggling, you can find the following nearby:

  • Primeape (fighting)
    West Province (Area Three)
  • Breloom (grass/fighting)
    West Province (Area Three)

Medali gym rewards

Larry rewards you with TM25 (Facade), a normal-type move that doubles in power if your Pokémon is poisoned, burned, or paralyzed. If this is your fifth gym badge, you’ll be able to control Pokémon up to level 45.

This next gym (in terms of difficulty) is Ryme’s gym in Montenevera.
