Reset your attributes with a rare item

Jeffrey Parkin (he/him) has been writing video game guides for Polygon for almost seven years. He has learned to love just about every genre of game that exists.

In this Elden Ring respec and Larval Tear guide, we’ll explain who you have to visit to respec your character, and tell you where to find the rare Larval Tear item you’ll need to do it.

Larval Tears are consumable items you’ll use with Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon to respec all of your attributes.

Table of contents

Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon

The first step of resetting your character’s stats is to play until you reach the Academy of Raya Lucaria. That area’s boss, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon will drop a remembrance and a Great Rune, but doesn’t actually die when you defeat her. Instead, she becomes an NPC who hangs out there at the Raya Lucaria Library site of grace.

Rebirth (respec your character)

With the Great Rune of the Unborn in hand, return to Rennala and speak with her. Choose the Rebirth option from her menu. You’re required to use a Larval Tear to be reborn. Doing so means all of your stats are reset to the baseline of your class and you get to reassign them as you see fit. This is a great way to experiment with builds if you find a fun new weapon or a powerful incantation. You can do this as often as you like, so long as you have Larval Tears to spend.

Larval Tears aren’t a very common item, though, so let’s talk about where you’ll find them. There are only a few places to find Larval Tears and there’s an excellent chance you won’t have found one by the time you reach Renalla. There are a few you can find earlier in the game, though, and several more to find as you work through Ranni’s questline.

There is one Larval Tear to find in Limgrave. It’s near the Agheel Lake South site of grace.

Just east of the Agheel Lake South site of grace, you’ll find a generic soldier standing on a cliff overlooking the road. When you kill him, he’ll transform into a lesser runebear (surprise!). Defeat the runebear and it will drop a Larval Tear.

There are three Larval Tears in Liurnia near Rose Church, Behind Caria Manor, and Pidia, Carian Servant.

Just a little southeast of Rose Church, you’ll run into a patrolling giant lobster. When you kill it, you’ll discover it was actually a grafted scion in disguise. Defeat the grafted scion, and it’ll drop a Larval Tear.

After you make your way through Caria Manor and defeat Royal Knight Loretta, you’ll have access to the Three Sisters plateau in the north of Liurnia. Head east along the road there and then to the southeast. You’ll find a graveyard guarded by several wolves and a non-boss version of the Red Wolf of Radagon. Nearby, you’ll find a ghost sitting in a chair. Speak to it and it’ll disappear, leaving behind a Larval Tear.

After you defeat Royal Knight Loretta, if you head west along the Three Sisters plateau instead, you’ll be able to drop down along the cliff to meet Pidia, Carian Servant — a vendor inside part of Caria Manor you couldn’t reach before. He sells a Larval Tear for 3,000 runes.

Depending on how far you’ve made it into Seluvis’ or Ranni’s questlines, Pidia might be dead when you arrive. If he is, pick up his bell bearing, and take it to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. You’ll be able to buy the Larval Tear from them instead.

It seems, generally, that Larval Tears are slightly more common underground. There is one to find in the Siofra River region at the Abandoned Merchant, and there are four more in Nokron, Eternal City when you reach that part of Ranni’s questline.

Look for the merchant to the west of the Worshippers’ Woods site of grace. They’ll sell you a Larval Tear for 3,000 runes. (Or you can kill them for their bell bearing and buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks.)

From the Nokron, Eternal City site of grace, head southeast. There’s a building with an open door there, and you can loot this Larval Tear from a corpse inside.

A bit farther east, you’ll head down a bunch of stairs on your way to the Mimic Tear (mini)boss fight. At the bottom of the stairs, look for a gazebo on your right. As you approach, you’ll get jumped by a few slimes. Fight them off and loot this Larval Tear from the corpse there.

In the southeast of the Nokron ruins, you’ll face off against the Mimic Tear. When you defeat it, it’ll drop a couple Larval Tears.
