Nintendo offers ‘game vouchers’ to Switch Online members

It’s like a members only discount, but more complicated!

The latest Nintendo Switch Online perk is an eShop discount, but there’s a twist.

Rather than simply offering an exclusive discount on digital games, Nintendo will give Switch Online users the opportunity to purchase a pair of game vouchers for $99.99. When redeemed at the eShop for two full priced Switch games, members may get a discount of up to $19.99.

The vouchers are only applicable to a small selection of titles, mainly essential first-party Switch games like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2. Astral Chain, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order will also be eligible when they become available for pre-order at the eShop.

Note that not all of the included games cost the full $59.99. Unless you’ve really been jonesing for some Fitness Boxing or sushi striking, it’s a good idea to pick up one of the $49.99 games another time so that you can take advantage of the full discount.

Digital store deals are pretty standard fare for gaming companies’ online services. Both Sony and Microsoft offer an extra discount to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold members during digital sales. Why Nintendo didn’t just offer Switch Online members a discount on a selection of games is beyond me, but Nintendo has always done things its own way.

Nintendo Switch Online members can buy the game vouchers through July 31. Games must be redeemed within 12 months of purchase. A Nintendo Switch Online membership costs $3.99 per month, $7.99 for three months, or $19.99 for a year. Family memberships are also available for $34.99. (And don’t forget that Twitch Prime members can redeem a free year of Nintendo Switch Online right now.)
