Why it’s worth taking Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s academy classes

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet begin with the player heading off to school — Naranja Academy for Scarlet and Uva for Violet. The place operates your home base. You’ve got a room there to rest and relax, but it’s also filled with a bunch of classrooms and hangout spots.

Of course, that means there are classes, too: Math, history, battle studies, language, art, and home economics.

What are the classes and should I take them?

If you’re a long-time Pokémon fan, many of these classes won’t teach you much, but they might be worth giving a shot. (For new Pokémon players, they do a pretty good job of explaining the basics.) However, there some helpful information that will be new to some people — like those unfamiliar with the shiny hunting or breeding communities. Beyond knowledge, the academy classes and the various interactions with teachers do award items, sometimes, but they’re usually pretty small. Whether they’re worth it is up to you!

After each class, you’ll often be able to go find and chat with the teacher to “get closer” to them. Occasionally they’ll give you small items. One of note is Mr. Jacq. Head to him and he’ll award you for racking up Pokémon in your PokéDex app. Once you collect 100 monsters, he’ll give you 20 Ultra Balls.

Throughout, you’ll see a “!” on the school map when a teacher has something to say to you. That’s the part where you’re getting close, leading into earning their trust and eventually getting friend status. As this progresses, various teachers will have little quests for you to complete for small rewards — one teacher asks for a sandwich ingredient, albeit a more challenging one. The rewards, again, are pretty small, but there are some interesting surprises thrown in. Mr. Salvatore will give you a Galarian Meowth, while Mrs. Tyme will give you 50 Rock Tera Shards, for instance.

How many classes are there?

More classes are unlocked as you win gym battles, to make for six classes each, not including a mid-term and final exams. For instance, language and art classes open up after the first gym. Once you’ve taken three of each class, you’ll have to take a mid-term. These are a series of simple questions based off what was taught in the earlier classes. To pass, you need to get three out of five questions answered correctly. Passing your mid-terms will award you five Exp. Candy S, which can be used to boost your Pokémon’s experience. After the finals, you’ll get five Exp. Candy M for each completed exam.

Once you’ve finished all the classes, you’ll earn five Exp. Point Candy L.
